Come Home For The Holidays

With its Victorian streetscape trimmed for the holidays, shop windows merrily decorated and showstopping Christmas tree waiting to light the way for Santa, downtown Georgetown could give Charles’ Dickens a run for his money when it comes to conjuring up the perfect Christmas.
You’ll find it here when you come “Home for the Holidays” on Saturday, Dec. 4. Presented by Georgetown/Scott County Tourism Commission, this annual celebration features the Christmas tree lighting and parade, beginning at 6 p.m., plus holiday activities and festive open houses.
Enjoy strolling from shop to shop – many of them tucked into the dozens and dozens of pristine buildings listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The atmosphere is so Christmassy, you’ll want to find gifts for even the naughtiest on your list. And you can, thanks to the variety of goodies stocked – everything from artisan-made jewelry, specialty pet portraits and trendy apparel to antiques, equestrian art and children’s toys. Another Georgetown holiday tradition is the special presentation of the Hanging of the Greens at Georgetown College in the John L. Hill Chapel on campus. This year the event, which originated in the early 1980s, will be held on Thursday, Dec. 2. The service includes music and the lighting of the Advent candles. Following the ceremony, attendees gather outside by candlelight to sing. Watch the 2019 performance here.
