Springtime Means Course Time at Canewood

In 2019, more than one-third of the U.S. population played, watched or read about golf. That’s a heck of a lot of people – over 107 million, in fact – keen on a good walk spoiled, a quote often attributed to writer and humorist Mark Twain.

The late golf great Payne Stewart may have chided Twain that his “bad attitude is worse than a bad swing.” Regardless, as the weather warms in Kentucky, Georgetown golf courses are ready to happily spoil your good walk, including the Canewood Golf Course.

Meandering through Georgetown’s beautiful Canewood neighborhood is this serene semi-private facility that offers a challenging layout for every level of golfer. Picture perfect, too, with three holes on the course’s back nine set along Elkhorn Creek, one of Kentucky’s best streams for floating and fishing and well-known for its scenic splendor.

Opened more than twenty-five years ago in 1994, Canewood is widely recognized for two things.

“The first is that it’s a shot maker’s course,” said PGA Professional Robert Cashman, who manages the course. “The course puts a premium on putting the ball in the fairway off tee shots.”

“The second are the scenic holes along Elkhorn Creek on the back 9,” he added. “It’s beautiful. Holes 14,15 and 16 run along the creek.”

Designed by Daniel H. McQueen, the 18-hole Canewood Golf Course features 6,501 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 70.7 and it has a slope rating of 123. The course is described as one that will put “your short game to the test with their fast and undulating surfaces.”

Inside the Pro Shop, golfers find logoed shirts, outerwear, golf shoes including ASICS’ BOA, ACE and GLIDE styles and JoxSox cushioned socks and a variety of golf equipment like Srixon golf balls and Frontline putters. The facility’s onsite snack bar serves hot dogs, snacks, beer and beverages.
