GEORGETOWN, KY – MAY 6, 2019 – Since Georgetown College began hosting the Horsey Hundred in 1983, the event continues to increase the number of cyclists on Scott County roads as more and more participants discover this bike-friendly community. Sponsored by the Bluegrass Cycling Club, it is now a leading central Kentucky cycling event, bringing visitors from 35 different states and Canada.

“Feedback from Horsey Hundred participants tells us that cyclists feel very much at home in Georgetown and return year after year for this event,” said Lori Saunders, executive director of Georgetown/Scott County Tourism. “Georgetown has become a more bike-friendly community because of its partnership with the Bluegrass Cycling Club and this event and appreciates all the riders and the economic contributions they make to the community when visiting.”

This year’s Horsey Hundred (May 24-26) mixes things up, changing route directions to add challenge and more excitement to the weekend event that has cyclists riding routes through rolling farm country and along historic sites and scenic vistas made even more beautiful with woodlands, streams, bourbon distilleries and horses pasturing in fields. All rides start and finish at Georgetown College, with routes stretching from 25 to 100 miles.

The Horsey Hundred is not a race but an opportunity for cyclists to share their passion and the camaraderie of 2,000-plus like-minded souls amidst the setting of Kentucky Horse Country. It is a family-friendly, tandem-friendly event with the thrill of rolling hills, ice cream floats, tasty lunch and more. Additionally, Georgetown/Scott County Tourism hosts a community-wide party with live music and food trucks on Friday night during registration and on Saturday during Georgetown’s Party in the Park event. Details and registration at www.horseyhundred.com.

According to a 2016 Horsey Hundred Economic Impact Analysis by the University of Kentucky, Horsey Hundred participants typically travel with at least one spectator-friend, spend nearly three days in Georgetown, fill an average of 633 hotel rooms – and add more than $140,000 (in accommodations alone) to the county’s bottom line, making the event a win-win for all involved. Overall, the event is responsible for approximately $623,000 in direct and indirect expenditures throughout Georgetown and Scott County.

“An overwhelming majority of event participants are from outside of Scott County, giving us a chance to introduce everything we have to offer here in Kentucky’s Horse Headquarters and entice these visitors back,” said Saunders.
